2021 Musicians

The 2020-2021 season marks Canadian violinist Jonathan Crow's tenth season as Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Jonathan earned his Bachelor of Music in Honours Performance from McGill University in 1998, at which time he joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Second Violin. Between 2002 and 2006 Jonathan was the Concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra; during this time he was the youngest concertmaster of any major North American orchestra. Jonathan continues to perform as guest concertmaster with orchestras around the world, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Filarmonia de Lanaudiere and Pernambuco Festival Orchestra (Brazil). Jonathan has also performed as a soloist with most major Canadian orchestras including the Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras, the National Arts Centre and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestras, the Victoria, Nova Scotia and Kingston Symphonies, and Orchestra London, under the baton of such conductors as Charles Dutoit, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Andrew Davis, Peter Oundjian, Gustavo Gimeno, Kent Nagano, Mario Bernardi and João Carlos Martins.

Jonathan joined the Schulich School of Music at McGill University as an Assistant Professor of Violin and was appointed Associate Professor of Violin in 2010. Current and former students of Mr. Crow have received prizes at competitions around the world, including the Menuhin International Violin Competition, Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition, Shean Competition, CBC Radio's NEXT competition, Eckhardt-Grammatte Competition, Canadian Music Competition, and Stulberg International String Competition, and work regularly with orchestras such as the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Verbier Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Kammerphilharmonie and Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan is currently Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Toronto.

In 2016 Jonathan was named Artistic Director of Toronto Summer Music, which has enjoyed record attendance and rave reviews in all of his first three seasons. An avid chamber musician, he has performed at chamber music festivals throughout North America, South America and Europe including the Banff, Ravinia, Orford, Domaine Forget, Seattle, Montreal, Ottawa, Incontri in Terra di Sienna, Alpenglow, Festival Vancouver, Pernambuco (Brazil), Giverny (France) and Strings in the Mountains festivals. He is a founding member of the Juno Award-winning New Orford String Quartet, a project-based new ensemble dedicated to the promotion of standard and Canadian string quartet repertoire throughout North America. As an advocate of contemporary music he has premiered works by over 50 Canadian composers, including Michael Conway Baker, Eldon Rathburn, Barrie Cabena, Gary Kulesha, Tim Brady, Francois Dompierre, Ana Sokolovic, Marjan Mozetich, Christos Hatzis, Ernest MacMillan and Healey Willan. He also includes in his repertoire major concerti by such modern composers as Ligeti, Schnittke, Bernstein, Brian Cherney, Rodney Sharman, Vivian Fung and Cameron Wilson.

Jonathan has recorded for ATMA, Bridge, CBC, Oxingale, Skylark, and XXI-21 labels and is heard frequently on Chaîne Culturelle of Radio-Canada, CBC Radio Two, and National Public Radio, along with Radio France, Deutsche Welle, Hessischer Rundfunk and the RAI in Europe.

Jennifer Ross enjoys a well-earned reputation as a respected violinist and educator. Her orchestral career began at the age of 19 as Associate Concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony. She then became a member of the Cincinnati Symphony before being named Principal Second Violin of the Pittsburgh Symphony—a post she held for 20 years.

Reflecting her deep commitment to teaching, Jennifer presents innovative workshops at festivals, universities and conservatories nationwide. She serves as Artist in Residence for Orchestra Studies at the National Orchestral Institute and is active in the Sphinx Organization, supporting diversity and inclusion in classical music. Ms. Ross appears regularly on the chamber music stage in series and festivals across the country, collaborating with celebrated artists including Yefim Bronfman, Pinchas Zukerman, Jaime Laredo, and Lynn Harrell. She has been heard on NPR’s Performance today from the Grand Teton Music Festival, where she performs each summer. Jennifer holds the Principal Second Violin chair of ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and is a proud founder and Co-Artistic Director of Jackson Hole Chamber Music. Ms. Ross is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music.

PETER STUMPF is Professor of Cello at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to this appointment, he was principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Mr. Stumpf's tenure in Los Angeles followed twelve years as associate principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. His professional orchestral career began at age sixteen when he joined the cello section of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He is a graduate
of the Curtis Institute of Music and the New England Conservatory.

A dedicated chamber musician, he is a member of the Weiss-Kaplan-Stumpf Trio and appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, in Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Cologne. He has performed with the chamber music societies of Boston and Philadelphia, and at
numerous Festivals, including the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Marlboro, Santa Fe, Bridgehampton, Spoleto, and Aspen. He has toured with Music from Marlboro, and with pianist Mitsuko Uchida in performances of the complete Mozart Piano Trios. As a
member of the Johannes Quartet he collaborated with the Guarneri String Quartet on a tour including premieres of works by Bolcom and Salonen.
Concerto appearances have been with the Boston Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Boston Philharmonic among others.

As a recitalist, he has performed at the Universities of Hartford, Syracuse and Delaware, at Jordan Hall in Boston, and at the Phillips and Corcoran Galleries in
Washington, DC. His awards include first prize in the Washington International Competition, the Graham-Stahl Competition and the Aspen Concerto Competition. As a teacher, he has conducted master classes at the Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts, Manhattan and Mannes Schools of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Seoul National University and several U.S. universities.

Canadian violinist Robert Uchida, Concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, enjoys a
varied career as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, and educator. His debut recording of
Andrew Violette’s Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin won international acclaim, with Strings Magazine
praising his “ravishing sound, eloquence and hypnotic intensity.”

Robert has been a concerto soloist with orchestras including the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, Edmonton Symphony, Kingston Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, Red Deer Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick, Symphony Nova Scotia, Orchestre de la Francophonie, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada.
Robert is Artistic Director of the Longshadow Music Festival in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. He
has taught and performed at festivals throughout North America including the Arizona MusicFest,
Banff International String Quartet Festival, Jackson Hole Chamber Music, Music by the Sea, National
Academy Orchestra, National Arts Centre Young Artists Program, New Brunswick Summer Music
Festival, Rosebud Chamber Music Festival, Scotia Festival, Sewanee Music Festival, Summer Solstice
Music Festival, and was Artistic Director of the Acadia Summer Strings Festival from 2010-2013.
Before joining the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Robert was Concertmaster of Symphony Nova
Scotia in Halifax. He performed on a Juno-nominated recording with Sarah Slean, and recorded
Requiem 21.5: Violin Concerto by Tim Brady, which won Classical Recording of the Year at the East
Coast Music Awards. As a guest concertmaster, he has worked with the Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony, Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, Ottawa Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic,
Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

A passionate teacher, Robert is a violin instructor at the University of Alberta, and has held teaching
positions at Acadia University and the Manhattan School of Music Precollege. His students have
continued their studies at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and Guildhall School in
London, have won major international competitions, and perform in ensembles in North America
and Europe.

Robert holds a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New
York and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Ottawa. His teachers and mentors include
Andrew Dawes, Morry Kernerman, Patinka Kopec, Heratch Manoukian, David Stewart, and Pinchas
Zukerman.

Robert loves volunteering and is honoured to have been inducted into the Ronald McDonald
House’s Character Club in Edmonton. He performs on a 1770 Guadagnini violin with Vision Solo
Titanium strings by Thomastik-Infeld Vienna.

SANCTUARY

The Sanctuary was created from a view near Shadow Mountain overlooking Grand Teton National Park. The focus was to exaggerate the fine shiftings of color among the aspen trunks and fall foliage, while remaining color harmony throughout the piece. The intense warm hue’s compete with the cool temperatures of the mountain in a bold fashion, while the subtle temperature shifts within the foliage holds this peaceful experience together. Much like a musical composition, there are high notes and low notes, minor keys among the major keys, and softer places of rest throughout the entire composition. However, it is always less technical and much larger than any of those analytical points of view: To render the sense of place found in the aspen grove, all the while translating my spiritual experience there is truly what this oil painting is all about.”
